Stillwater Public Schools finished the year ahead of energy-savings projections by $59,485, according to a release from the Stillwater Board of Education.

The district’s projection, set by the district and its energy conservation partner, Energy Education Inc., of Texas, was to reach $163,000 in savings. The district finished the year with $222,485 in savings.

The district charts its utility bills with Energy CAP energy-standard software used by corporations across the country, said Scott Peterman, the district energy educator and manager.

Peterman said the software calculates cost avoidance, taking into account the decrease in the amount of energy usage as well as the increase in energy costs. The bills from two years ago were compared to last year’s bills to come up with the more than $200,000 in savings.

Stillwater Superintendent Walter Swanson said the staff has made an extra effort to control energy use.

“Thanks to this dedication on the part of our employees, we have an additional opportunity to protect our community’s taxpayers’ investment in our public schools,” Swanson said in the release.

Energy Education Inc.’s energy conservation program, an alliance that trains school district personnel to create substantial energy savings, is funded solely by the savings the program generates.

Districts can then redirect additional energy dollars to educational resources.

The company has worked with more than 750 school districts.

Energy Education Inc., founder and CEO William S. Spears said Stillwater Public Schools achieved this level of success by consistently implementing the people-oriented approach to energy conservation and maintaining productive efforts at all levels.

“We commend the superintendent and school board, and other administration, faculty and staff members for clearly fulfilling their commitment to being good stewards of the taxpayers’ money and the environment,” Spears said in the release.
