Loudoun Schools Honored By EPA For Energy Conservation
Loudoun County Public Schools was named a 2010 ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, one of only two school districts in the nation to earn such a distinction.
Jeff Platenberg, assistant superintendent for support services for the school system, accepted the award of behalf of LCPS during an awards banquet held in Washington, DC, Thursday evening.
Lisa P. Jackson, an EPA administrator and keynote speaker for the event, said the award displayed that corporations and organizations can "make environmental gains in a way that promotes innovation that cuts costs that boosts our economy."
"The true strength of ENERGY STAR is how it closes the gap between these two seemingly intractable ideas," Jackson said. "ENERGY STAR uses government standards to reward the market-based drivers of our economy, our capacity for innovation and invention."
Through a partnership with Energy Education, a Dallas, TX, based energy management firm, the school system has generated a savings of more than $34.4 million in cost avoidance.
