Commerce ISD realizing energy savings
By CHAD BLACKSHEAR COMMERCE — The Commerce Independent School District has saved thousands of dollars in utilities through its recently enacted energy conservation program.
The Commerce ISD Board of Trustees received a presentation regarding the program developed by Energy Education, a firm that develops programs for school districts, universities and large churches when it met Monday night.
The board of trustees hired Energy Education in June 2009 to develop a program for the district.
The district saved $107,605 between November 2009 and April through the program, according to the presentation given to the board by Kevin Shaw, a math teacher at the high school who oversees the program for the district.
Shaw informed the board that the high school and middle school, the district's largest energy consumers, made the most improvements. Shaw also emphasized that the reductions in energy usage have not created an uncomfortable environment in the campuses.
"Safety and comfort will never be compromised," said Shaw.
The formula used to calculate the $107,605 savings compares the district's utility usage for the months evaluated to the same months of the previous year. The software used factors in weather fluctuations, such as this year's colder winter.
Shaw informed the board that the district is likely to reduce its energy usage by more than the $180,000 that was initially expected. The savings, he said, are part of a collaborative effort among the district's staff.
"It is a people-driven program," said Shaw. "It is about getting people involved and changing habits."
According to the presentation, the energy savings equate to 513 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions, the equivalent of taking 92 cars of the road for a year.
The board also scheduled a public meeting on June 28 beginning at 7 p.m. to discuss the proposed 2010-11 budget and tax rate. The next regular board meeting is scheduled for July 19 in the middle school library.
